How Do I Pray?
May we learn from Christ that prayer is primarily listening and encountering God, an art to be practiced with insistence, the place where we perceive that everything comes from God and returns to God. -Pope Francis
Our Book of Common prayer lists several types of Christian prayer, specifically “adoration, praise, thanksgiving, penitence, oblation, intercession, and petition” (BCP, p. 856). Some of these intersect and overlap. The important thing to say is that our church believes that almost anything can be prayer. Prayer can occur with or without words, using written forms or from whatever emerges from the heart. The theme that unites all prayer is that it begins when we turn our attention toward God.
